In alloys for powerful permanent magnets especially for those based on Lu-Al-Fe and Lu-Fe-Si systems with very high magnetic energy, stable properties, and high Curie point; however lutetium high cost puts its limitations for most important applications.

Lutetium oxide is used as neutrons absorber and activation detector; lutetium silicate single crystal may serve as a good material for particle counter.
